The world knows Muhammad Ali for a number of reasons, each one of them important because all are part of his legacy, but it was his genuine altruism that was perhaps, the most inspiring.  He started his career by shaking up the world, but he dedicated his life to trying to heal the world.

He said it best himself, in an exerpt from Thomas Hauser's Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times:

"All of my boxing, all of my running around, all of my publicity was just the start of my life. Now my life is really starting. Fighting injustice, fighting racism, fighting crime, fighting illiteracy, fighting poverty -- using this face the world knows so well and going out and fighting for truth and different causes."
