In 1967, Muhammad Ali met secretly with members of local gangs at the Senate Theatre in the East Garfield Park neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois.  Ali organized the meeting to express his desire to reconcile differences among Black youths and to warn them to end violence in Black communities following the riots that took place in Chicago in 1966.

A reporter, who was present due to an anonymous tip, Jeff Kamen of WCFL radio, wrote in 2016 that Ali's interference likely stopped further rioting that year.
