Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, 1997
An award presented to any sports-related person who has made the most significant humanitarian contribution in a given year. Muhammad Ali was awarded the Arthur Ashe award in 1997, just 4 years after the award was created. Ali was a U.N. Messenger of Peace, the first boxer to appear on a Wheaties box and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1990, he helped negotiate the release of 15 American hostages in Iraq and Kuwait.
