The Aftermath
While Muhammad Ali's announcement about his conversion to Islam and his name change created a media frenzy, that was not the only topic repeatedly reported on. Shortly after his victory over Sonny Liston, the World Boxing Association and the United States Senate Subcommittee on Anti-Trust and Monopoly began investigations into the fight contract signed prior to the bout, calling into question validity of the fight itself.
There were suspicions that the fight was fixed by organized crime syndicates out of Las Vegas, which supposedly had ties to Liston. Additionally, Sonny Liston was involved in the business operations of Inter-Continental Promotions, Inc., the entity that promoted the fight. It was stipulated that they would also promote Ali's next fight should he be victorious over Liston. Ultimately, both investigations found insufficient evidence to claim the fight was fixed.
