The Later Rematch(es)

Though the World Boxing Association (WBA) decided that the fight between Liston and Ali was not fixed, the organization was still concerned over the plans for a rematch between the two. In the agreement signed prior to the fight, there was a clause that stated that should Muhammad Ali be victorious and take the title from Sonny Liston, that Inter-Continental Promotions, Inc., would have the rights to promote his first defense of his title. Rematch clauses in fight contracts were not allowed by WBA standards and, to them, this sounded like a possible rematch clause.

When it was agreed that the two would meet again on November 16, 1964 in Boston, Massachusetts, the World Boxing Association decided to strip Muhammad Ali of their Heavyweight Championship title and suspend the Massachusetts Boxing Commission for sanctioning the rematch.
